Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy. We help restaurants streamline operations, increase revenue, and deliver amazing guest experiences through our platform that combines restaurant point of sale, team management, guest-facing technology, and award-winning customer support. As a Toaster, you will be challenged to take on meaningful projects to help craft the company's future. Join us as we empower the restaurant community to delight guests, do what they love, and thrive.

Your mission is to lead the architectural design, technical execution, and implementation across the foundational domains of Toast’s Team Suite products, Payroll and Team Management. The Payroll product delivers daily value to its users - enabling restaurant owners to pay their staff and pay their taxes, and enabling transparency for wages and tips for restaurant employees. The Team Management suite allows restaurants to hire, manage, and schedule their staff.

As a Principal Engineer, you will serve as a key technical leader in the group, driving modern architectural patterns—including spec-driven development and agentic workflows—to deliver high-impact software.

A day in the life (Responsibilities)

 • Lead fellow developers, product managers, designers, and user researchers to build a strong tech infrastructure that enables amazing features
 • Own the architecture for authentication, authorization, and organizational hierarchy — driving technical direction in these domains across the organization
 • Help us transform a traditional SasS platform into an agentic, system-of-action
 • Flex your full-stack muscles by driving challenging large end-to-end initiatives or core architecture changes in a supportive, collaborative team environment
 • Define and drive technical strategy for problems that affect multiple parts of the business
 • Mentor developers across multiple teams through code-pairing and detailed code, architecture, and project reviews
 • Champion best practices for development, deployment and quality life cycles
 • Leverage cutting edge AI tools to enhance your development workflow, improve velocity, and help pioneer new approaches to building - contributing to a culture of innovation and productivity across the team.

What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

 • Strong technologist with extensive experience defining and implementing high scale SaaS solutions.
 • Deep experience with identity and access architecture — authentication, permissions models, and multi-entity organizational hierarchy — in a multi-tenant SaaS platform.
 • Experience with a broad set of technologies that includes those used at Toast - tiered web applications, microservices, mobile, API design patterns, Java, Kotlin, React, data analytics.
 • Strong enthusiasm for agentic development practices, LLM integration, and modern software paradigms.
 • Experience with integration design patterns across high-scale, data-rich enterprise systems.
 • A proven track record of building partnerships across engineering, product, customer success, and other stakeholders.
 • Experience and interest in mentoring peers
 • Experience maintaining a high bar for quality, and guiding teams to hold a high bar for the technical quality of their deliverables.
 • Hungry to take on challenging technical projects

Who are we?

Cohere is the leading security-first enterprise AI company. We build cutting-edge foundation AI models and end-to-end products that are designed to solve real-world business problems.

We’re training and deploying frontier models for enterprises who are building AI systems. We believe that our work is instrumental to the widespread adoption of AI and we are looking for folks that want to be part of that.

We obsess over what we build. Each one of us is responsible for contributing to increasing the capabilities of our models and the value they drive for our customers. Cohere is a team of researchers, engineers, designers, and more, who are all passionate about their craft.

We are a global technology company headquartered in Toronto with key offices in London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul. Join us!

Why this role?

North is Cohere's cutting-edge AI workspace platform, designed to revolutionize the way enterprises utilize AI. It offers a secure and customizable environment, allowing companies to deploy AI while maintaining control over sensitive data. North integrates seamlessly with existing workflows, providing a trusted platform that connects AI agents with workplace tools and applications.

The Agents & Automations team builds the platform inside North that lets customers create AI-powered workflows. Some of these workflows are structured automations, such as routing requests, keeping systems up-to-date, or triggering approvals. Others are more flexible agents that can gather context, use tools, make decisions, and take action across enterprise systems.

As an engineer on this team, you will help build the core platform that makes this possible: the workflow builder, execution engine, integrations, debugging tools, observability, evaluation systems, and feedback loops that help customers understand and improve what they deploy.

This is broad product engineering work across frontend, backend, and AI-powered systems. The goal is to ship reliable software that helps customers augment or automate real business workflows with agents and automations they can trust.

As a Software Engineer, Agents & Automations, you will:

Design, build, ship, and maintain core capabilities for North’s Agents & Automations platform.

Build product and platform features that help users create, run, debug, evaluate, and improve agents and automations.

Own features end-to-end, from technical design through implementation, testing, launch, and iteration.

Work across the stack, from frontend product surfaces to backend systems, depending on what the product needs.

Make practical technical decisions that balance speed, quality, depth, and user impact.

Collaborate closely with product, design, modelling, customer-facing teams, and other engineers to define the right outcomes and ship measurable improvements.

Use AI actively in your work, while staying intellectually engaged and accountable for the quality and reliability of what you ship.

Example problems you might work on include helping users turn natural-language intent into a working automation, adding richer analytics for deployed agents, creating better debugging tools for failed runs, or designing workflow primitives that make complex enterprise automations easier to build.

You may be a good fit if:

You have built, shipped, and operated production software used by real users or customers.

You are comfortable working across backend, frontend, product, data, and infrastructure boundaries.

You have strong product judgment, pay close attention to user experience details, and care deeply about whether your work helps the end user.

You bring high agency: you act, tinker, learn quickly, and drive change without waiting for perfect instructions.

You move quickly while maintaining a high bar for correctness, maintainability, and user impact.

You communicate clearly in a distributed, asynchronous team, document important decisions, and collaborate well across functions

You can advocate for a point of view, change your mind when the evidence changes, and commit once a decision is made.

You are excited to use AI to do your best work, while staying accountable for the systems you build.

Our stack includes Python, TypeScript with React, Postgres, and Kubernetes. We care more about strong fundamentals, product judgment, agency, and learning ability than prior experience with every part of the stack.

If this role sounds exciting, but your experience does not match every bullet, we still encourage you to apply.

Full-Time Employees at Cohere enjoy these Perks:

A weekly lunch stipend of $75/£75 or equivalent in your local currency for lunch.

Full health and dental benefits, including a separate budget for mental health.

RRSP matching, 401K, Pension Scheme.

100% Parental Leave top-up for up to 6 months, for either parent.

Annual enrichment benefits:

Arts & culture, fitness/wellness, quality time, and a workspace improvement credit.

Education & learning stipend for conferences, courses, and coaching.

6 weeks of paid vacation (30 working days!)

Budget for traveling to other offices if you are remote, plus an annual company offsite.

How and Where We Work:

Cohere is remote-friendly, but we also have offices in Toronto, London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin and Seoul with more opening soon.

For those in the office: a daily lunch program, plenty of snacks, and regular community and social events.

For those not near an office: a co-working benefit so you can work alongside others in your city.

Everyone receives a $500 home office stipend to set up your workspace properly.

If any of the above doesn’t line up exactly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply.

We strive to create an inclusive work environment for all; we welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to providing equal opportunities.
Build a Safer World.

TRM Labs provides AI-powered intelligence solutions that help public and private sector agencies investigate and disrupt crime. TRM's platforms enable investigators to trace illicit activity, build cases, and construct operating pictures of threat networks. Leading agencies and businesses worldwide rely on TRM to make the world safer and more secure.

TRM's government cloud environment gives public sector investigators the same real-time analytical power our commercial customers rely on, and this role keeps that environment fast, reliable, and compliant as it scales. You'll join the Data Platform Serving team, working on the StarRocks-backed serving layer that sits underneath government cloud investigations, alongside the engineer who currently owns this domain solo. This is a chance to build hands-on distributed systems experience in one of the most operationally demanding environments at TRM: a regulated, high-availability government cloud deployment.

The impact you will have:

You will own performance tuning on the StarRocks serving layer, using AI-assisted query profiling (Claude, internal tooling) to find and fix slow query patterns before they become customer-facing incidents.

You will build and harden data pipelines feeding government cloud investigations, using AI code review workflows to ship reliable changes faster in a high-compliance environment where mistakes are costly.

You will reduce single-point-of-failure risk on GovCloud data infrastructure by becoming the second engineer who can independently operate and troubleshoot the serving layer, cutting incident response time when the primary owner is unavailable.

You will use AI-assisted debugging and log analysis to triage production issues in a regulated environment, turning multi-hour investigations into rapid root-cause fixes.

What we’re looking for:

U.S. citizenship is required for this role due to government cloud data access requirements.

Hands-on experience operating distributed OLAP or serving-layer systems (StarRocks, Trino, ClickHouse, or similar), including query tuning and performance optimization at scale.

Experience owning data pipeline reliability and incident response, and comfort using AI tools (Claude, Cursor, or similar) to accelerate debugging, code review, and documentation.

Independent ownership mindset: you can pick up an unfamiliar piece of production infrastructure, use AI-assisted research and code exploration to ramp quickly, and take on-call responsibility with minimal oversight.

About the Team:

The Data Platform Serving team owns the layer that turns TRM's data into fast, reliable answers for the teams and systems built on top of it.

We're distributed, not distant: the team communicates constantly across Slack and async docs, with a bias toward direct, evidence-based technical discussion.

Decisions are made close to the data: engineers who operate the systems make the calls on architecture and tradeoffs, with input from the broader Data Platform org.

We work closely with Forward Deployed Engineering and Product teams to keep the government cloud environment at parity with our commercial platform.

Team Operating Rhythms:

Weekly team sync to review open incidents, in-flight infrastructure work, and upcoming compliance milestones.

Async daily updates in Slack on pipeline health, ongoing tickets, and blockers.

Sprint-based planning cycles with clear ownership assigned per workstream.

Retro after any production incident to capture learnings and adjust runbooks.

Learn about TRM Speed in this position:

A production database migration broke search-attribute registration across two environments right before a critical audit deadline. The on-call engineer traced the root cause, shipped a fix, and had both environments passing smoke tests again within the same day.

With a compliance deadline days away, the team needed off-cluster backups for the government cloud database with zero prior tooling in place. An engineer designed and shipped the full backup and restore pipeline — three stacked PRs — in under two weeks.

Audit log retention needed to jump to meet a new compliance floor with no advance notice. The engineer used AI-assisted config generation to update retention policies across the environment and verify compliance the same week.

Application Instructions

If you’re interested in joining TRM, we encourage you to apply directly. Every application is reviewed by our Talent team.

Before applying, review the job description carefully and highlight the experience and impact that best demonstrate the required qualifications. Please also provide thoughtful and accurate answers to the application questions, as these will be used to evaluate your qualifications for the role.

If you send your resume directly to someone at TRM, we can’t guarantee it will reach the appropriate hiring team. Applying directly is the best way to ensure you’re considered.

What to Expect From Our Interview Process

Our process is designed to understand how you think, solve problems, and deliver impact, while giving you the opportunity to evaluate TRM. Most interview processes include a case study, AI skills assessment, and Leadership Principles interview.

Recruiter Intro: Explore your experience, motivations, and alignment with the role.

Hiring Manager: Dive deeper into your relevant experience, skills, and impact.

First Round: Typically 1–2 interviews focused on the skills most critical to the role.

Final Round: Meet some of the people you'd be working with. This is usually a panel-style session where we go deeper on your craft, problem-solving, and alignment with TRM.

References: We’ll speak with former colleagues who can provide perspective on your work and impact.

Offer: If it’s a mutual fit, your recruiter will walk you through your offer and answer your questions.

Welcome to TRM: Once you sign, we’ll get you ready for your first day and onboarding.

Your recruiter will share your specific interview plan and preparation guidance along the way.

Learn more about interviewing at TRM

Life at TRM

We are building a safer world. That promise shows up in how we work every day.

TRM moves quickly. We are a high velocity, high ownership team that expects clarity, follow-through, and impact. People who thrive here are energized by hard problems, experimentation, and continuous feedback. If something takes months elsewhere, it will ship here in days.

Our work sits at the intersection of AI, national security, and fighting crime. The problems are complex, the stakes are real, and the environment evolves quickly. The pace and intensity of the work reflect the importance of the mission. As a result, the way we operate requires a high level of ownership, adaptability, collaboration, and creative problem-solving.

At TRM, you should expect:

Priorities and targets to change quickly as we experiment and iterate

Work that often requires operating with a high degree of ambiguity

A high level of personal ownership and accountability

Close collaboration across teams and functions

Frequent, high-touch communication

Creative problem solving and out-of-the-box thinking

A pace that rewards urgency, adaptability, and outcomes

This environment is energizing for people who enjoy building, solving hard problems, and making progress in situations that are not always fully defined. It also requires comfort navigating ambiguity, adjusting course as new information emerges, and maintaining focus and positivity in a fast-moving and intense environment.

We also recognize that this style of operating is not for everyone. If you are primarily optimizing for predictability or a consistently balanced workload, we encourage you to use the interview process to pressure test whether this environment is truly the right fit. We want teammates who thrive here, not just survive here.

At the same time, many people find this work deeply rewarding. If you are excited by meaningful problems, motivated by ambitious goals, and energized by working alongside mission-driven colleagues, there is a good chance you will find TRM to be an exceptional place to grow and contribute. We expect every team member to use AI to accelerate and reimagine their craft, not just automate surface tasks.

At TRM, AI fluency means you are among the top 10 percent of operators in your function in how you apply AI to:

Accelerate repeatable workflows

Structure and solve problems

Improve output quality

Increase speed and leverage

You will be evaluated on applied AI fluency during the interview process.

Leadership Principles

We hire and grow against three leadership principles. They’re the standards for how we operate, treat each other, and make decisions.

Impact-Oriented Trailblazer: We put customers first and move with speed, focus, and adaptability.
Get to Know Us

Horizon3 is a fast-growing, remote cybersecurity company dedicated to the mission of enabling organizations to proactively find and fix and verify exploitable attack vectors before criminals exploit them. Our flagship product, the NodeZeroTM platform, delivers production-safe autonomous pentests and other key assessment operations that scale across the largest internal, external, cloud, and hybrid cloud environments. NodeZero has been adopted by organizations of all sizes, from small educational institutions to government agencies and Global 100 enterprises. It is used by ITOps/SecOps teams, consulting pentesters, and MSSPs and MSPs.

We are a fusion of former U.S. Special Operations cyber operators, startup engineers, and formerly frustrated cybersecurity practitioners. We're committed to helping solve our common security problems: ineffective security tools, false positives resulting in alert fatigue, blind spots, 'checkbox” security culture, cybersecurity skills shortage, and the long lead time and expense of hiring outside consultants. Collectively, we are a team of learn it alls, committed to a culture of respect, collaboration, ownership, and results.

What You'll Do

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Defensive Agent team, you'll build the platform that NodeZero's defensive agents run on. Our AI researchers define what these agents should reason about, you build the systems that make that work in production, across thousands of customer tenants, without breaking anything.

That means real distributed systems problems, not glue code. They execute inside customer environments under tight isolation, credential, and egress constraints. And when an agent proposes a change in production, the platform has to be able to simulate it, stage it, gate it on approval, roll it back, and prove after the fact exactly what happened and on whose authority.

This is a platform role. You'll own the runtime, the tool layer, the orchestration, the connector framework, and the observability that makes agent behavior debuggable. You'll work closely with our AI researchers, but you are not being hired to tune prompts — you are being hired to build the substrate that makes their work shippable and safe.

Responsibilities

Build and own the agent execution runtime: durable, resumable, long-running workflows with checkpointing, idempotent steps, cancellation, and timeouts at both the step and run level.

Design and implement the tool layer that agents act through — a registry with versioning, schema validation, per-tenant enablement, and authorization enforced server-side rather than by the model.

Build the connector framework for third-party security control planes (EDR, firewall, identity, SIEM, cloud IAM).

Implement the safe-change pipeline: dry-run and simulation, blast-radius classification, approval gates for high-impact actions, staged rollout, rollback, and an immutable per-tenant audit trail.

Extend NodeZero's tenant isolation model to agents that take write actions, covering execution boundaries, egress control, quotas, and cross-tenant leakage in caches, indexes, and logs.

Develop core product features in ETL and GraphQL to support data processing and retrieval for agent context, run history, and remediation state.

Build the ETL pipelines that turn pentest and remediation outcomes into the datasets our researchers train and evaluate against.

Instrument everything. Distributed tracing across an agent run, cost and token accounting per tenant, and the tooling to answer 'why did the agent do that' without guessing.

Partner with AI researchers, attack engineers, and product to take capabilities from prototype to production, and feed platform constraints back into research direction early rather than late.

Required Education / Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field.

7+ yrs professional software engineering experience using modern object-oriented or functional languages (Python, Go, Scala, C++, TypeScript, etc).

Experience building applications on cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, GCP, using container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.

Expert proficiency in SQL.

Demonstrated experience designing and operating distributed systems in production: asynchronous workflows, queues, retries, idempotency, and partial failure.

A track record of shipping and operating production services, including on-call ownership.

What Sets You Apart

Experience building agentic or LLM-backed systems in production

Experience with a durable execution (such as Temporal) or workflow engine or having built equivalent checkpointing yourself.

Experience building multi-tenant platforms with hard isolation requirements, workload identity, and short-lived credential brokering.

Experience integrating a long tail of third-party APIs behind a normalized abstraction.

Familiarity with security control planes and their APIs — EDR (CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Microsoft Defender), firewalls, SIEM, cloud IAM.

Experience with database architectures including relational (PostgreSQL) and graph (Neo4j), and experience building GraphQL backends.

Experience with observability tooling (Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana) and distributed tracing.

Awareness of prompt injection and untrusted-input handling in systems where an agent consumes data from the environment it operates in.

Perks of Horizon3

Inclusive Team: We value diversity and promote an inclusive culture where everyone can thrive.

Growth Opportunities: Be part of a dynamic and growing team with numerous career development opportunities.

Innovative Culture: Work in a collaborative environment that encourages creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.

Hybrid & Remote Work: We embrace a mix of remote and hybrid work models depending on role and location, including our Chicago office, where some roles require regular in-office presence.

Competitive Compensation: We offer competitive salary, equity and benefits. Our benefits include health, vision & dental insurance for you and your family, a flexible vacation policy, and generous parental leave.

Compensation and Values

At Horizon3, we believe that our people are our greatest asset, and our compensation philosophy reflects this core value. We are committed to fostering an environment where all employees feel valued, respected, and rewarded for their contributions. Our compensation structure is designed to be fair, competitive, and transparent, ensuring that every team member is recognized and compensated equitably across roles, levels, and locations.

In accordance with various State’s transparency regulations, we provide the following salary range information for this position:

Base salary range: $170,000 - $235,000 annually. The exact salary will be determined based on the selected candidate’s location, qualifications, experience, and relevant skills.

Additional compensation: All full-time roles are eligible for an equity package in the form of stock options.

You Belong Here

Horizon3 is not just an equal opportunity employer - we are a community that values diversity, equity, and inclusion as fundamental principles of our culture and success. We are dedicated to fostering a workplace where everyone feels welcome and respected, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, marital status, or any other legally protected status by law.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion means we strive to attract, develop, and retain a workforce that reflects the varied communities we serve. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation and strengthen our ability to create cutting-edge cybersecurity solutions. At Horizon3, every team member is valued and supported in an environment that encourages personal and professional growth.

We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and experiences, and we encourage all qualified individuals to apply. Come be a part of Horizon3, where your unique contributions are recognized, and your potential is limitless.

Other Duties

Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee. This role sits within Corporate Security Engineering and focuses on building secure-by-default controls for endpoints and the SaaS platforms that support them, with a strong emphasis on macOS. You'll own meaningful technical decisions around endpoint hardening, automation, and detection, and you'll help turn security requirements into scalable engineering systems that are measurable, auditable, and designed to reduce friction for end users.

This is a strong fit if you're motivated by solving security problems with code. You will work across endpoint management, identity, and security operations to improve how GitLab manages macOS, iOS, Windows, and Linux devices through Infrastructure-as-Code, Terraform, and GitOps workflows. In your first year, you'll be expected to strengthen endpoint security architecture, expand automation, and improve the reliability and auditability of how controls are deployed and maintained.

What you’ll do

Lead the security architecture of GitLab's endpoint fleet and related infrastructure, with a primary focus on macOS.

Design and support automation for secure endpoint deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management using code-based workflows.

Manage endpoint and SaaS security configuration through Terraform, version control, merge requests, continuous integration pipelines, and automated rollouts.

Define and enforce security baselines across macOS, iOS, Windows, and Linux endpoints.

Develop patching and software distribution approaches that align with security, compliance, and operational requirements.

Partner with Information Technology, Security Operations, and Detection and Response teams to improve endpoint telemetry, detections, and response models.

Drive process improvements that reduce manual work and lower risk by favoring automation, policy-driven controls, and auditable change management.

Mentor engineers across Corporate Security and Information Technology, and serve as a senior escalation point for complex endpoint security issues.

What you’ll bring

Experience designing and delivering endpoint, systems, or corporate security solutions in environments that require scalable, durable controls.

Deep knowledge of endpoint management platforms such as Jamf Pro or FleetDM, especially for architecting and securing macOS environments.

Strong hands-on ability with Terraform and Infrastructure-as-Code practices, including module design, state management, and pipeline-based deployment.

Experience working with GitOps workflows where changes are managed through Git repositories, merge requests, code review, and automated pipelines.

Strong proficiency in scripting or programming for automation and security tooling, such as bash, Python, PowerShell, or Go.

Familiarity with cloud identity providers and directories, including platforms such as Okta, Google Workspace, LDAP.

Ability to communicate clearly, collaborate across distributed teams, and work independently in an all-remote environment.

Openness to bringing transferable experience from adjacent security, systems, or platform engineering backgrounds, along with a practical and security-focused approach to problem solving.

About the team

The Corporate Security Engineering team secures the internal environment GitLab team members use every day, including endpoints, identity systems, SaaS applications, and platforms that store sensitive internal data. It's a small, high-leverage team that treats security work as engineering work: building with code, operating through Git, and using reviewable, testable, and auditable workflows by default. The team partners closely with Information Technology, Security Operations, and Engineering across regions, collaborating asynchronously to build controls that scale across GitLab's all-remote workforce while reducing friction for end users.

The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently for residents of the United States only.
